36 years ago I was adopted into a wonderful loving home, I grew up an only child. Today I know my biological family and that has been a huge part of the adult I've become. It's truly a remarkable thing to look back on, more about that to come!
I was what you'd call a sickly child growing up, always having ear infections, sinus infections and plagued with terrible mouth ulcers. I don't mean one or two, I mean dozens. If there was a stomach bug in the city, I promise I got it! It wasn't until my high school years that my GI tract also decided to start a revolt. I can remember heart burn so terrible that I could hardly catch my breath. Upper GIs, lower GIs, micro ulcers all in my stomach, sever nose bleeds, no doctor with any answer. By the time I was in college I would often be on lortabs for pain because of the insane amount of ulcers. I think by this time I had topped out at about 86 at once in my mouth.
I remember the day ... I started looking around on the internet (still a newer thing at the time) I had searched many times before but I finally ran across a blog where someone said they had 100 plus ulcer outbreaks. They said stop eating gluten. I immediately started my gluten research, this was not a common thing at all at the time. My PCP at the time, who was one of the most wonderful men I've ever known, nearly laughed at me for even thinking about trying this new diet out. He also said it couldn't hurt so go right ahead. I knew within 2 days, I hadn't had a single new ulcer outbreak. This was unheard of in my 20 years of existence. That same PCP immediately recommended the diet to 3 other people.
